Ginkakuji (銀閣寺)

Ginkakuji is a pavilion in Jisho-ji, one of the Zen temple. In 1482, Yoshimasa Ashikaga built in from the idea of Kinkakuji which was built by his grandfather, Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. Many people believe that Ginkakuji is silver colored, in contrast to Kinkakuji (Golden temple ). In fact, Kinkakuji means Kin which is Gold in English. However, the Ginkakuji is not silver as the name suggest Gin which is silver in English.

Therefore, some people are disappointed with it. Yet, in my opinion, Ginkakuji has good points.  I like this temple
particularly with the snow covers the roof. Although it was snowing heavliy  when I went there, I hope you feel this good atmosphere.

Unryu-in temple (雲龍院), Imakumano Kannon-ji (今熊野観音寺)

Unryu-in temple is located inside of the Sennyu-ji Temple as sub-temple. It was established in 1372 by Emperor Gokogon. There are some interesting points on how viewers see the scenery outside. The concept of windows are related with Zen spirit.

This window is called "Satorino Mado", which describes the achievement of a deep Zen- spiritual awareness, in contrast to "Mayoino Mado" square-shaped window.

Ukai(鵜飼)~Cormorant fishing, Arashiyama

Cormorant fishing (Ukai) is a traditional method for catching fishes by using trained cormorant birds. This fishing method has been done more than 1300years and Peru and China have the same fishing techniques, while the origin of this is still unknown.

Nowadays in Japan, Ukai is rather a show than real fishing. More than 15 local places are showing in Japan, and in kyoto,  Arashiyama and Uji are holding it.

I will introduce Arashiyama's Ukai that has normal Ukai boat and special Ukai boat, called Kyutei Ukai Sen. A boat rower costumed in traditional royal court clothes and the boat is decorated.

The boat goes toward the upper river.
After reaching the fishing spot, the boats are stopped and the fishing starts.

Fishes come and gather to the fire's light, and the trained cormorant birds try to catch the fishes. At the moment of catching a fish, the cormorant fisher controlled the collar string and take out the fish from the bird's throat.

This fishing method had been used for presenting fish as a special gift to the royal court.  The reason is that this fishing method does not give any damages to the fish. No scratch and no bleeding.

The fishing show is about one hour and then go back to the boarding place.
The Ukai in Arashiyama usually is held from beginning of July till middle of September.

*Note that no reservation is needed on normal Ukai boarding, while Kyutei Ukai Sen boarding needs reservation which opens from 9am on your boarding day.

FYI, the videos below are another Ukai in Uji.
